Words of praise
Eileen Brady is simply the best editor I know. I’ve sold every freelance piece she’s edited for me.

I worked with Eileen Brady at The State Journal-Register in Springfield, Illinois, during her tenure as editor of The Voice, our teen section, and after she was promoted to features editor.
In my 25 years in the newspaper industry, I’ve never worked with someone more dedicated to their craft than Eileen. She nurtured teens just beginning to get their feet wet in journalism, was patient with our freelancers and staff writers, and gave me full respect as a copy editor and designer.
Eileen was a delight to work with in every respect, and I miss her to this day.

I worked with Eileen Brady at The (Jacksonville) Daily News, and she was absolutely brilliant. I knew her to be intelligent, attentive to detail, constructive, hard-working, and best of all, fun. When I needed someone to edit my work and to help me select an entry for the Andrew Britton Short Story Competition, I wanted someone I could trust, someone I respected, and someone with the right perspective. She was the first and only person I approached for assistance. Her skills and feedback were invaluable, and I’m happy to say I won first place in the contest.

I first met Eileen at the State Journal-Register in Springfield, Ill. I was a high-school senior, there for one semester through a state internship program. While interns at other office buildings around town were getting coffee, I was learning the ins and outs of the journalism world— not by watching but by doing. Eileen made certain of that.
She was then the editor of the Voice section, which attracted a large teen audience. She brought out the best in each of the young adults who wanted to be a part of the section, always pressing us for excellence while having fun and maintaining journalistic integrity.
Many years have passed since those early days of my career, but I’ve kept in touch with Eileen. She continues to be a great friend and mentor, always giving the best of herself and bringing out the best in others.

When Eileen Brady approached me about writing a column for the Wilmington News Journal, we were running sporadic staff columns and several syndicated columnists. Eileen’s columns breathed life into the Viewpoints pages and made readers sit up and take notice of this fresh voice with sparkling wit and humor.
Her style of writing is personable and gregarious and makes you experience life along with her. One of Eileen's columns, “You Know You’re From Wilmington If ...” was one of those “Aha, yes!” pieces that even now is passed around, and I bet people still remember the stories she shared of her daughter, Pearl, and their adventures.
Eileen Brady’s voice is memorable and was an undeniable asset to the Wilmington News Journal!

Eileen is a creative, collaborative editor who respects a writer’s work while still burrowing deep into its details to make constructive improvements. Throw in a great sense of humor and innovative story-package ideas, and she’s an editor I’d gladly write for again in a second.

Just wanted to write to you and let you know how much I have enjoyed your columns in the WNJ. Wonder why we have to lose something before we feel compelled to say how much we have liked it? Anyway, you will be missed.

Thank you for your article “The worstest day ever for kids and parents.” ... We need more articles like that instead of those rosy colored ones we often see with political motivations. Thank you for your candid words and your “tell it like it is” approach!

Kudos to you, Eileen Brady, for a few reasons. Thank you for being a bona-fide good citizen and doing your part to help keep our earth clean and green with recycling. Thank you for also putting in words what I have thought since day one of the “announcement” regarding Wilmington's recycling program “efforts.” ...
Thanks again for writing your article. I have no doubt you will probably get negative feedback, but I wanted to let you know there are others who think the same as you and sometimes get tired of the “battles.” Thanks for taking this one on.
